Shirley Bernice Kalt (Sirkin)

Shirley Bernice Kalt was born November 24, 1903 in New York. The following entries for Shirley are from the Detroit city directory:

She married Irvin Sirkin, of Toronto, Ontario on January 1, 1933 in Detroit, Michigan, and had a son Calvin Dennis Sirkin, born August 2, 1937, in Detroit, Michigan. In the 1930's Irwin opened the Consumers Candy and Tobacco Company with Saul Kalt. After World War II, Irvin and Shirley moved to Miami, initially living in a rural area near Miami, later moving to Miami. Irvin Owned a candy store and sold real estate in Miami, and Shirley worked as a sales clerk in a Miami department store.

Irwin died on April 13, 1968 in Miami. After Irwin's death, Shirley continued to work in a department store and devoted a great deal of time to volunteer work, particularly with hospitals. She was a very active woman, with a photographic memory, even into her 90's. From the time she was 80, I visited her every year in the Miami area and she would always remember obscure family events from the past--in fact, she is the one who got me interested in genealogy.

Shirley died in Miami on May 6, 1995 at the age of 91. She is buried with Irvin at Mt. Sinai Cemetary in Miami.

Calvin Sirkin moved to Chicago, where he lived until his death on April 2, 1983.

Sidney Kalt

Sidney M. Kalt was born July 4, 1905 in Detroit, Michigan, and died February 25, 1965 in Detroit. (He apparently was not given a middle name at birth and later adopted "M." as a middle initial). He married Bee Schrier June 23, 1935 in Detroit, Michigan. (See wedding picture above). The following listings for Sidney are from the Detroit city directory:

Sidney left the Kalt company in about 1940. During World War II, he had a steel fabrication business, and in the late 1940's, he went into the building business with his brother Charles. During that time they built a number of small houses in Wyandotte, and created a park on a piece of land that was too small to develop. They named it Kalt Brothers Park; it has since been renamed. In 1952 Sidney established the Hydraulics Fittings Corporation in Port Huron, and in about 1954 returned to the bulding business.

Bee was a travel agent in Detroit for many years and in 1958 opened her own travel agency (Bee Kalt Travel). Sidney was the office manager for the agency and also was involved in real estate sales until his death in 1965. His sons, Harold and Steven, took over management of Bee Kalt travel after Bee's death in 1985, and continue to run the business today.

Jacob (Jack) Kalt

Jacob Eugene Kalt was born January 23, 1908 in Detroit, Michiga, and died February 7, 1960 in Detroit, Michigan. He married Laura Chiprin on June 14, 1936 in Chicago, Illinois. The following listings for Jack are from the Detroit city directory:

For most of his life, Jack was with the Kalt Roofing company. Although he was listed as "Cass Plaza Pharmacy", he was a part owner of this business, and was still with the Kalt Company. In 1952, he went to work with the Roger Steel company, which was partially owned by Saul, but he continued to be involved with the Kalt Company. In 1955 or 1956, he left the Roger Steel company, and went back to the Kalt company full time, where he remained until his death in 1960.

Jack lived next door to his brother Sidney on Woodingham in Detroit. They bought 3 lots together and built 2 houses on them.

After Jack's death, Laura remarried in 1964 to Oscar Meyers. Oscar died in December, 1987, and Laura then married Leo Davis. Leo died in August of 1996. Laura passed away in 2008.

Max Kalt

Max Kalt was born November 28, 1911 in Detroit, and died April 27, 1987 in Sherman Oaks, CA. He married Eva Benchman on December 25, 1938, probably in Detroit.
The following listings for Max are from the Detroit city directory:

Max worked most of his life for the Kalt company, running the company with Sidney and Jack after their father died. Even though he was listed as being with Roger Steel in 1956, he was also with the Kalt Company. After Jack died in 1960, Max and Sidney sold the Kalt Company in 1960 after Jack died and Max moved to moved Sherman Oaks, California, where he ran an auto parts business. Max died in 1987, and Eva died in 2002. Max's daughters, Joni and Sandra, currently live in southern California.

Saul Kalt

Saul Richard Kalt was born February 17, 1916 in Detroit. He married Joan Modell January 26, 1950.

The first listing for Saul in the Detroit city directory was in 1938, where he was listed as "Salesman, Consumers Candy and Tobacco Company". This was a business that he owned with his brother-in-law, Irvin Sirkin.

In about 1946, he formed a partnership with Sidney and a cousin, Louis Golden, and incorporated Kalden Steel (named for Kalt/Golden). In 1952, he incorporated the Roger Steel Corporation (named after Rusty, Joan's son from previous marriage). He left the steel business in 1957, and in 1958 he opened the Wonderland ice rink on 8 Mile Road in Detroit. In 1959, he re-opened Roger Steel, and ran it until 1963. In 1963 he incorporated the Kalt Steel company, which was later renamed Kalt-Lori Steel. During the early 1960s he also owned a restaurant (The Round Table, on Livernois Avenue), along with Sam Sobel, husband of his niece Carol. At one time he also was in busines with his brother Max, starting a company that made TV tables.

Saul passed away on July 21, 2007 in the Detroit area. Joan passed away on November 21, 2006.

NOTE: Joan had two children from a previous marriage to Burton Hyman--a son, Burton (Rusty), and a daughter, Cathy.
