Zalman Kalt (My Great-grandfather)
Zalman Kalt was born in Galicia (Austria), most likely in the
town of Grodek Jagiellonski. There is no accurate information on
his birthdate, but based on the birthdates of two of his sons
(1878 and 1881), he was most likely born in the 1850's. He
married Sobbel Wunter (Sobel Winter in some records), and died
between 1930-1935 in Grodek Jagiellonski. (Grodek Jagiellonski,
also known as Grodek, Gorodok, or Horodok, is 26 km WSW of Lvov,
and in the 1920's had a Jewish population of 2,545 and a total
population of 10,660).
There are several other people documented in these pages who could be my great-grandfather Zalman, but I have not been able to establish a definitive link. Some possibilities include:
- Salamon Jacob Kalt, born in Lvov in 1861 ,
- Salman Kalt born in Grodek Jagiellonski in 1853 (this is the most likely candidate),
- Salamon Kalt, realty owner in Winniki
(near Lvov), listed as "giving blessing" for births
of the children of Isaak Kalt in Winniki in 1922 and 1923,
- Zalman Kalt, born in Grodek Jagiellonski (date unknown). This Zalman Kalt
is probably not my great-grandfather Zalman.
My great-grandfather Zalman had at least 3 children--my Grandfather (Samuel), his brother (Isaac), and another brother, whose name is unknown. Records from Grodek
indicate that a "Salman Kalt" had 4 children (Gitel, Jakob Lieb, Henie, Hudes), with "Sobel Steiner" listed as the mother, and
2 other children (Beile, and an unnamed infant) with "Sobel Kalt" listed as the mother. I don't know whether the "Salman Kalt" who is the father of these
children is my great-grandfather or not, but I have included them in this tree, at the bottom.
