Morris and Kalman Sperber, about 1900
Kalman Sperber was born on April 16, 1875 in or near Sambor, Galicia. Based on census records, he arrived in the United States in about 1896 and was naturalized in 1901. He married Gitel (Gussie) Greenfield (daughter of Milton and Hannah Greenfield) in about 1897. Gitel was born in September of 1876 in Hungary, and immigrated to the United States in 1897. If the census records are correct, this would mean that Kalman and Gitel were married after they arrived in the United States, but I have not been able to find any marriage records for them.
Some time between 1900 and 1904, their first child, Anna, was born in New York. About 1904, a second child, Sarah was born, and two sons Milton (born about 1905) and Abraham (born September 18, 1907) followed. During this time the family lived in lower Manhattan, first on 2nd St., then on East 7th St.
As early as 1900, Kalman's occupation was listed as "printer", and in the 1915 New York City directory, he was listed as the Secretary/Treasurer of the Sperber Printing Company, at 121 West 22nd Street. By this time, the family was living at 653 Driggs Avenue in Brooklyn.
By 1920 the family had moved to 130 Murray Lane in Queens, and by 1922 the Sperber Printing Company had moved to 349 West 59th Street (at Columbus Circle) where it remained until Kalman's death.
Gitel died on December 26, 1948, at their home at 854 Gerard Avenue in the Bronx. Kalman died at the age of 75 on June 7, 1950 at the Riverside Nursing Home in Manhattan. Kalman and Gitel are buried in Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Cypress Hills, Long Island. After Kalman's death, his son Abraham took over the printing business.
Children of Kalman and Gitel Sperber
Anna Sperber married Al Young some time between 1920 and 1925. They had two children--Robert (born before 1925), and Irwin (born about 1925). The family lived on Long Island. Irwin married just after World War II and is currently head of DuArt Studios in New York. Robert received a degree in English from Harvard University, and was married in the early 1950's. He is a television and film producer in the Los Angeles area.
Sarah Sperber married Jack Feinstein and had two children, Raymond and Adele. (Raymond apparently changed his last name to Fellers).
Milton Sperber married and had two daughters. In the 1934 New York City directory, he was listed as Secretary of K. Sperber Press, and was living in Paterson, New Jersey.
Abraham (Abbie) Sperber married a woman named Sylvia, and they had two children, a son, Sanford, and a daughter. In the 1934 New York City directory, Abraham was listed as Treasurer of K. Sperber Press, with residence at 2380 Creston Ave. He died in New York in December, 1969.
